All unit members (all represented professionals within
the University of
Maine System) are represented by UMPSA. UMPSA assists unit members to
resolve salary, benefit, and working condition issues they may have.
UMPSA
representatives are available to help enforce the Bargaining Agreement
through informal and formal procedures including grievances and
possibly
arbitration or court action. UMPSA representatives provide advice and
assistance to unit members including legal advice relating to wages,
benefits, and/or working conditions.
UMPSA is the organization charged with bargaining with
the University System over wages, benefits, and working conditions. Our
current Bargaining Agreement expires on June 30, 2009.
Once the negotiators reach a Tentative Agreement, it is
sent out to the dues-paying UMPSA membership for ratification. Unit
members who are not UMPSA union members cannot vote on the contract. If
the Tentative Agreement is ratified by UMPSA members and by the Board
of Trustees, it goes into effect.
UMPSA members can vote on tentative contracts. They are
also eligible
to be appointed to the bargaining council, negotiating team, various
campus and
state-wide committees (like the health committee or the retirement
committee) or become campus grievance representatives or membership
recruiters. UMPSA members also vote on UMPSA officers (both campus and
state-wide positions) and are eligible to run for union offices
themselves.
Other benefits of membership include a million dollar
professional
liability insurance policy at no charge, newsletters and journals from
UMPSA, MEA, and
NEA, and discounts on tires, ski tickets, insurance, and other
products.
Grievance training, membership recruitment, and bargaining skills
training is also available. The MEA and NEA higher education
conferences provide
additional information and training for members. The MEA and NEA
provide
research and data analysis for UMPSA including University budget
analysis,
funding analysis and advocacy, contract analysis, and legal opinions
and
services.
UMPSA members are funding all of these services for all
unit members.
These loyal UMPSA members are supporting over 1300 represented
professional employees. Please pay your fair share. Please support
your bargaining unit. Please join UMPSA and get involved, especially
now
when we are fighting to preserve your health benefits and fighting for
equitable salaries for all unit members. We need a strong union to
preserve
your rights.
